A WhatsApp drip campaign sends a series of messages to each customer over days, such as a welcome on day 0, a tip on day 2, and an offer on day 5. In Inaiy, go to Drip campaigns, click New drip campaign, choose a segment, add up to five template steps with a delay before each, keep the stop rules on, and click Save & start. Each new contact in the segment starts the sequence on their own timeline.
It follows up for you, and stops as soon as the customer replies, so nobody gets an automated nudge in the middle of a real conversation.
Who this is for and what you need first
This guide is for marketers who onboard, nurture, or win back customers on WhatsApp.
You need:
- Approved templates for every step. See WhatsApp template approval.
- A saved segment of who should get the sequence, such as new sign-ups. See WhatsApp contact segments.
- The timing you want between messages.
Steps to create a WhatsApp drip campaign
1. Open Drip campaigns
Click Drip campaigns under Messaging. Each sequence shows how many steps it has, how many contacts are enrolled, and its status, such as Running (callout 2). Drip campaigns are scoped to the WhatsApp number you are working in. Click New drip campaign (callout 1).
2. Name it and choose the audience
Under Campaign details, enter a Name, such as Welcome nurture, and check the WhatsApp number.
Under Audience (callout 1), choose:
- Saved segment: pick a segment. Leave Keep enrolling new segment contacts while this sequence is running ticked so people who join the segment later also get the sequence.
- All contacts: everyone on this number, enrolled once when the sequence starts.
Re-enrollment (callout 2) decides if someone can go through the sequence again: Never (new contacts only), After they complete the sequence, After they stop (reply / opt-out), or After any finished enrollment. Set Cooldown days to space out repeat runs. A contact is never enrolled twice at the same time.
3. Add the message steps
Under Message steps, each step has a Template, a Delay after previous (callout 2), and a Unit of Minutes, Hours, or Days.
- Step 1 usually has a delay of 0 so it sends as soon as the contact enrolls.
- Later steps wait for their delay after the step before. A delay of 1 day on step 2 means one day after step 1.
- If a template has variables, fill them in. Click the person icon to use a contact field, such as the first name.
Click Add step (callout 1) for more, up to five. Remove deletes a step.
4. Set stop rules and start
Under Stop rules, keep both boxes ticked (callout 1):
- Stop when the customer sends any WhatsApp reply.
- Stop when the customer opts out (STOP, unsubscribe, etc.).
Messages already sent are never reversed; only pending steps stop.
Then choose how to start:
- Save & start (callout 2) begins enrolling now.
- Save & schedule starts at the date and time in Start at (optional).
- Save draft keeps it without starting.
How to confirm it worked
- The sequence shows Running on the Drip campaigns page, with the number of enrolled contacts.
- Open it to see the Step funnel and counts for Enrolled, Completed, Stopped (reply), Stopped (opt-out), Cancelled, and Failed.
- Add your own number to the segment. You should get step 1, and after you reply, your enrollment should show as stopped by reply.
Common mistakes
- Turning off stop on reply. A customer who asks a question and then gets "Did you see our offer?" feels ignored. Keep it on unless the sequence is purely informational.
- Delays that add up wrong. Each delay counts from the previous step, not from enrollment. For messages on day 0, 2, and 5, use delays of 0, 2, and 3 days.
- Editing after it starts. Only draft or scheduled sequences can be edited. To change a running one, pause it or cancel it and create a new one.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a drip campaign and a broadcast?
A broadcast sends one message to everyone at the same moment. A drip campaign sends a series of messages to each contact, timed from when that person enrolled. Someone who joins your segment on Friday starts at step 1 on Friday, while earlier contacts may already be on step 3.
Can a drip campaign send messages without templates?
No. Steps use approved templates, because the customer may not have messaged you in the last 24 hours, and WhatsApp only allows templates outside that window. This also means each step follows Meta's per-template pricing for its category, such as utility or marketing.
How do I pause a drip campaign?
Open the sequence from the Drip campaigns list and click Pause. No further steps go out while it is paused, and enrolled contacts keep their place. Click Resume to continue. To stop it for good, choose Cancel sequence from the actions menu. Steps already sent are not affected.
