WhatsApp contact segments are saved audiences, such as "VIP customers" or "leads from last week's ad", that you can pick in any campaign or drip sequence instead of choosing contacts again each time. In Inaiy, go to Segments, click New segment, name it, filter contacts by tag, country, source, or ad, click Select all matching, and click Save segment. Contacts who match later are included automatically.
Good segments mean each message goes to the people it is meant for, which keeps block and report rates low.
Who this is for and what you need first
This guide is for marketers who send campaigns and drip sequences.
You need:
- Contacts in Inaiy. See import WhatsApp contacts.
- Tags, countries, or sources on those contacts to filter by. Tags work best, because you control them.
Steps to create WhatsApp contact segments
1. Open Segments
Click Segments under CRM. Each segment shows an estimated contact count, such as "~1 contacts" (callout 2). The count is an estimate because filter-based segments are recalculated when they are used. Click New segment (callout 1).
2. Name the segment and add filters
Under Segment details, enter a Name and an optional Description so teammates know what it is for.
Under Audience rules, narrow the contacts:
- Search contacts by name or number.
- All tags: pick a tag. The chosen tag appears as a chip (callout 1) with Clear all next to it. Use Browse all tags to see every tag.
- All countries and All sources: filter by country or by where the contact came from.
- Ad leads (CTWA), IG ad leads (CTIA), and Messenger ad leads: turn one on to target people who messaged you from an ad. Enter an ad ID to target one ad.
The Summary (callout 2) updates as you go, for example 1 tag.
3. Keep it live with Select all matching
You can save a segment two ways:
- Select all matching (callout 1): saves the filters, not a list. The summary reads Filter-based audience, and the note says contacts are resolved on send. Anyone who matches the filters when a campaign sends is included, including contacts added after you saved.
- Tick individual contacts or use Select page: saves a fixed list of those people only.
Use filters whenever you can. Click Save segment (callout 2).
4. Use the segment
- In a broadcast, choose Saved segment under Audience source and pick it. See WhatsApp broadcast campaign.
- In a drip sequence, choose Saved segment under Audience and keep continuous enrollment on, so new matches join the sequence. See WhatsApp drip campaign.
How to confirm it worked
- The segment appears on the Segments page with an estimated count close to the number of matches you saw.
- Tag a new contact with the same tag. Start a test campaign with the segment, and the new contact should be in the audience count.
- Open the segment again to check the filters were saved as you expected.
Common mistakes
- Saving a hand-picked list by accident. If you tick contacts one by one, new contacts never join. Click Select all matching for segments that should grow.
- Inconsistent tags. "VIP customer" and "V.I.P." look alike but are two different tags, so a filter on one misses the other. Agree on tag names with your team and fix old ones on the Contacts page.
- Ignoring opt-in. Each contact shows Opted in or Not opted in. A segment can include people who have not agreed to marketing; campaigns warn you, but filter them out for marketing sends.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a segment and a tag?
A tag is a label on a single contact, such as vip or wholesale. A segment is a saved audience built from filters, which can combine a tag with a country, source, or ad. You tag contacts as you learn about them, and use segments to decide who receives a campaign or sequence.
Do segments update automatically?
Yes, if you saved them with Select all matching. Inaiy stores the filters and finds matching contacts each time a campaign or sequence uses the segment, so new and changed contacts are included. Segments saved from individually ticked contacts stay fixed until you edit them.
Can I target people who clicked a specific ad?
Yes. Turn on Ad leads (CTWA) for Click-to-WhatsApp ads, or the Instagram or Messenger option, and paste the ad ID from Meta Ads Manager. Only contacts who first messaged you from that ad match. Leave the ID empty to include leads from any ad on that channel.
