On this page

WhatsApp checkout lets customers pick products, share a delivery address, choose how to pay, and place an order without leaving the chat. In Inaiy, open Commerce → Settings. Turn on payment methods under Payments, set cart limits under Checkout & cart, and choose how customers browse under WhatsApp shop. Then turn on your shop. Inaiy walks each buyer through the steps and creates the order for you.

Every finished checkout becomes an order on the Orders page. Checkouts that stall are listed so you can follow up.

Who this is for and what you need first

This guide is for shop owners setting up selling on WhatsApp for the first time.

You need:

  • A connected WhatsApp number.
  • Products in your catalog with prices and stock. See WhatsApp product catalog.
  • For online payments, a Razorpay account. WhatsApp Pay is India only and also runs through Razorpay.
  • Permission to change Commerce settings.

Steps to set up WhatsApp checkout

1. Choose how customers pay

Go to Commerce → Settings → Payments. Accept payments must be ON; turn it off to pause all new payments, for example while you are closed.

Under How customers pay (callout 1), switch on the methods you want:

  • Cash on delivery: the customer pays when the order arrives.
  • Razorpay: Inaiy sends a secure link to pay by UPI, card, or net banking. Click Manage to connect your account.
  • WhatsApp Pay (callout 2): customers pay inside the chat. Click Set up to start.

Customers see only the methods marked Offered to customers.

Turn on the payment methods you want (callout 1). WhatsApp Pay needs setup first (callout 2).

2. Set cart and checkout limits

Open Checkout & cart. On the Cart tab:

  • Cart expiration (hours) and Abandoned timeout (hours) (callout 1): when a cart is cleared, and when an idle cart counts as abandoned.
  • Max cart items, Max qty / product, and Min checkout value: limits for each order.
  • Cart enabled: lets customers build a cart in chat.

On the Checkout tab (callout 2), Checkout expiry (minutes) sets how long a customer has to finish once they start paying. Click Save cart or Save checkout.

Set when carts count as abandoned (callout 1). The Checkout tab (callout 2) sets how long checkout stays open.

3. Pick a shop style and turn on your shop

Open WhatsApp shop. Under Shop style (callout 1), choose:

  • Chat browsing: customers browse categories and products in the chat. No WhatsApp catalog needed.
  • Catalog cards: products are sent as WhatsApp catalog cards. Needs a connected catalog.
  • Both: chat browsing, plus catalog cards for published products.

The Sell on WhatsApp checklist at the top shows what is left. When everything else is done, click Turn on (callout 2).

Choose how customers browse (callout 1), then turn on your shop (callout 2).

4. What the customer sees

Once the shop is on, a customer who has items in the cart is guided through the checkout in the chat:

  1. Their name and phone number.
  2. The delivery address.
  3. Choose a payment method, from the methods you offered.
  4. An Order review with items, discount, shipping, tax, grand total, and address, plus Pay now, Edit address, and Cancel buttons.

For cash on delivery the order is placed straight away. For online payment, the order is confirmed once the payment succeeds. To start the journey from a keyword, use a shop workflow. See WhatsApp workflow automation.

5. Follow up on stuck checkouts

Go to Orders → Sessions · Checkouts. The cards count checkouts started, completed, and abandoned (callout 1), plus the average checkout value. Filter the list (callout 2) and open a checkout to see the customer, address, and order, then message the customer from the inbox.

Abandoned checkouts (callout 1) are worth a follow-up. Filter by status (callout 2).

How to confirm it worked

  1. From your own phone, browse your shop and add a product to the cart.
  2. Finish the checkout using a sample name, such as Asha Rao, and cash on delivery.
  3. The order should appear on the Orders page within seconds, and the checkout should show under Sessions · Checkouts as completed.

Common mistakes

  1. No payment method offered. If every method is off, or Accept payments is off, customers cannot finish. Check the green "You can take payments" banner.
  2. Checkout expiry too short. Customers paying by UPI may switch apps. Give them enough minutes to come back and finish.
  3. Choosing Catalog cards without a catalog. That style needs a connected, published catalog. Start with Chat browsing if you have not linked one. See Meta commerce catalog for WhatsApp.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers pay without leaving WhatsApp?

With WhatsApp Pay, yes: customers in India pay inside the chat, processed through Razorpay. With Razorpay links, the customer taps a secure link, pays by UPI, card, or net banking, and returns to the chat. Cash on delivery needs no payment step at all, so the order is placed straight away.

What happens to abandoned checkouts?

A checkout that is not finished before its expiry, or that the customer cancels, counts as abandoned. It stays listed under Sessions · Checkouts with its status, so you can open it, see what the customer wanted, and follow up. The customer's cart stays available, so they can start checkout again any time.

Do I need a WhatsApp catalog to sell?

No. With the Chat browsing shop style, customers browse your categories and products as chat messages, and no WhatsApp catalog is needed. A connected catalog is only needed for Catalog cards, which show native WhatsApp product cards. Choose Both to offer chat browsing and catalog cards together.
